The Hermit stands on a bridge overlooking a stream, no company save the wild will-o’-the-wisps that dance along the banks. The dense canopy of trees deadens all sound but the languid trickling of the river. The moon, ruler of the subconscious, rises full behind him. With a lucidity born of silence, he looks within.
~
upright meaning:
searching within • solitude • self exploration
Relationships with others are essential, but before we can communicate with others, we must be able to communicate with ourselves. When your thoughts are consistently muddled or diluted, take some time to uncloud your vision by gently removing yourself from society. Search within yourself for answers, and you may be surprised by what you find. Don’t worry about the sudden silence; it is merely expectant, waiting for you to speak.
~
reversed meaning:
withdrawn • lonely • need for connection
Inverted, the Hermit hangs precariously on the bridge, as below him, the trees have knitted a lush, comfortable floor to catch his fall. When you receive his inversion in a reading, it’s time to shake things up. Leave the comfort of your daily trappings and reach out. You may be reaching the end of a long-deserved rest, or you may crave rest still yet out of reach. Put yourself out there and be open to the new connections that can form, there is no need to dwell in solitude for eternity.
